MAMMA MIA! The world’s No1 musical is coming to Kuala Lumpur and Malaysians will not only be stomping their feet to the music of ABBA but opening their hearts to those in need too. Star Publications (M) Bhd’s project to bring in this London West End musical for the Christmas and New Year holiday season seeks to also raise funds for The Star Foundation, the charity arm of the media group.
“Proceeds from the Charity Night of the musical will go to various needs to be identified by the Foundation,” said Datuk Steven Tan, the Foundation’s Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Star Publications. “This is in line with the Foundation’s mission to help various existing charities continue their good work by channelling the funds that we can raise via such high-profile events.”
Star Foundation will largely focus on its work in education, health and general welfare. Over the years, Star Publications has organised numerous highly successful musical stage shows. Tan cites the more recent success of the musical extravaganza Mystical Steppes: Along the Silk Road organised by The Star in January 2007 which raised a total of RM996,718.50 for the Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor, Hospis Malaysia and the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia. Wild Zebra, another highly successful event held in 2005, raised RM730,000 and the proceeds were channelled to Shelter Home for Children, the Salvation Army, Tasputra Perkim, Asrama Darul Falah of Perkim, Bethany Home and Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s Paediatric Institute.
Dances of the Dynasties in 2004 raised RM1mil for the Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia and another RM250,000 each for Hospis Malaysia and the Daybreak Association. The Star has been involved in pioneering Broadway and West End musicals to Malaysia since the 1980s as well as staging cultural shows from different countries including China.
“We are always very happy and thankful that we can count on the generosity of Malaysians whenever we organise such events,” said Tan. Mamma Mia! also comes at an opportune time when the nation is going through changes following the 12th general election. “Malaysians have always shown that they will look out for one another in a caring nature. Political, ethnic, religious and cultural differences always take a back seat when we are united in the common good for all Malaysians.
“The heart of charity beats in every Malaysian and I am confident that they will make Mamma Mia! a sold-out event.”
Final arrangements for the hugely successful musical, based on ABBA’s hit songs from the 70s and 80s, are being made by The Star. ABBA’s hit songs include Honey, Honey; Money, Money, Money; Thank You for the Music; I Have a Dream; Super Trouper; Dancing Queen; Voulex-Vous; Winner Takes It All and, of course, Mamma Mia.
Mamma Mia! from London West End will be performed at Istana Budaya Kuala Lumpur from Dec 17 to Jan 1. The staged musical has been seen by over 30 million people worldwide and an estimated 17,000 people see the show daily around the world in major cities. This does not include the cinema version currently showing in various parts of the world including Malaysia.
