The future longest bridge!
It's kinda weird idea actually. Former PM of Malaysia, Abdullah Badawi scrapped Dr. M's previous plan to build the 3rd bridge connecting Johor and Singapore. Instead, now the feasibility study is underway to build a bridge connecting Malaysia Peninsula to....Sumatra island of Indonesia, Malaka to Dumai in particular. The project will cost $11 billion and span 60 km, and is said will be funded joinly by Indonesia-Malaysia bizmen consortium.
Many sceptical about this. I found in Malaysian forum, this bridge will ease illegal workers to come to Malaysia. In Indonesia, people thinks that it will make malaysian drugs dealers entering Indonesia. Well, to me, both issues raised by those nationalist make sense. But, let me share you my perspective on this.
This will create a big boost in economy for both countries, as goods are easier to reach its markets. Also, for tourism, more Indonesian will come, vice versa. You must take note that Indonesians are the second largest tourist in number (1.5-2 million per year), following Singaporean (9-10 million per year). But, Indonesian spends more than the sins, research said.
Singapore-Malaysia has two wide bridge, and i think this is sufficient to bridge their people. Besides, Singapore population is only 4 million, compared to 70 million in Sumatra. Imagine the opportunity of Malaysian products' huge market, which can be reach easier by trucks.
This will create a real Integration between Indonesia and Malaysia. Malaysians can buy Indonesian CDs or movies, just a drive away.
Imagine Indonesia being just a drive away.
I particularly like his last point. :-D
Mungkinkah akan ada dialog yang berbunyi begini:
"boring ni! jom, dumai?"
"weh cd baru dah kuar, jom gi beli kat dumai mall?"
"bosan ah.. nonton di dumai mall yuk?"
dan lebih parah -
"jom lunch kat dumai mall?"
tapi tak boleh lawan yang ini, paling melampau...
sms colleague: saya lambat masuk sket.. pegi bank kat dumai mall
nota: yang pasti, kalau so7 manggung di sumatera, hehehe...lu pikirlah sendiri!
