Between Malaysia, Thailand and Phillipines

I was googling for Malaysia and this came up in a forum:

I would like an honest opinion between Malaysia, Thailand and Phillipines which is a better place for retirement?? which country is offer better health treatments, education and etc.

Your suggestions is much appreciated.

Thanking you in advance.

Let's see what these people have to say, shall we?

The Philippines for the following reasons.
First financial: The UK has the Double taxation aggreement with the Philippine government and our state pension is allowed to be index linked there (very important).
Security: Appart from a small area on Mindanou island, all the Filipinos are Christian and live a similar life style to us Europeans. Choose a nice area to live with similar Filipinos families and all will be okay. Nice properties are within 7/24 security patroled areas. I've usually obtained good respect from the police when i've crossed their paths.....once was offerred a beer after refusing to pay an on the spot "jay-walking" fine!
Lifestyle: English is learnt by school children in Infancy and they smile when given the chance to use it. Menus, okay, not as varied as Thai/Malay but you can grow Lemon grass plants on your balcony and all the other makings are cheaply available. Religeon also effects the working day of its inhabitants, visit Hatyai on the Thai border and see the Malays enjoying the benefits that they can't get in their own country. Dress and behaviour culture is very different to our European way and should be considerred. Pointing your feet at people in Thailand for example or touching them on their heads is very bad manners.....easily done? Bar life in each of these countries is very different to Europeans. Women do not drink alcohol as a whole and the few bars around will be patronised by older men and the odd "good time" girls.
Manila is a sprawling down-at-heal city since the departure of the Americans and is only useful for shopping in the many marbelled glittery Shopping malls in Makatii (best shirt in the shop £3.00). Cebu and other Island major cities are more likely for setting roots down again and do not have the quantity of "Shanty town" areas that Manila has. There is a retirement programme for overseas retirees, take a look at www.livingingthephilippines.com for more info. ...Private medical insurance might be an issue and govern where you choose to live.

I live in Thailand, on my 3rd retirement visa now. It's not difficult to get a 12 month retirement visa. all you need is, Either a pension equivalent to 800.000 baht ( 11ooo pounds stirling ) or pension and money in bank to equal this.
Depending on where yo stay, Thailand has everything you could want.
Excellent hospitals at a price. Supermarkets as good as the west and very cheap. Schools are plentiful, run on western lines. It's hot, of course, but thats what we want.
I have a company pension, which fares me well here. In the uk, I would have to do some serious budgeting, but I have a better standard of life here than when I was working in the uk. There are many of us here, and we have a great ex-pats community, playing pool, darts, and generally doing what blokes do. Hope this has been some help.

Interesting question!

OK, these are purely my own personal views:-

The Phillipines would be my last choice, mainly due to relatively high crime rates, corruption (these things exist in Thailand & Malaysia too but to a lesser extent), and poor state of the infrastructure.

Thailand isn't bad, (lovely food and people), but you will find buying property there very difficult (i.e. many legal constraints) and getting a long term visa might be difficult......although I heard there is now some form of 'Retirement Visa' for Thailand now?

Malaysia would be the place for me!

Why? Well firstly they have a proper legitimate retirement visa scheme, (called
Malaysia My Second Home), which is simple enough to apply for. Secondly, English
is very widely spoken and they have an English Common Law system so you can
understand what is going on and read a contract (handy when buying property).

In terms of cost of living, I think you'll find the Phillipines probably the cheapest, Thailand second and Malaysia the highest......having said that, non are too expensive and if you are coming from the UK you'll find all three countries 'very reasonable' in terms of costs.

All three countries have great beaches, lovely people and good food!

Difficult choice......but it would be Malaysia for me!

Another person said,
It all depends on your preference but let me tell you something about Malaysia.

Basically, it's a nice country. Lots of entertainment, Kuala Lumpur is nice and most of the called Malaysia as 'Food Paradise'. You can get almost anything you want here. The cost of living over here is reasonable.

As for the weather, it is typically hot and sunny most of the time. Sometimes, you
will encounter heavy showers during the evening.

The Verdict?
Hi! everyone,

Thank you so much for your reply and I really appreciate it. Malaysia, Thailand and Phillipine are indeed very nice and fascinating country and we really love them all as we've been there.

Just to let everyone know that we've made our mind and we chose Malaysia is our second home due to the fact, and for the simple reason that Malaysia is offer better health treatment, better economy, education and a lot saver to live and that is very important to my family and I appreciate for those who reply my post thread, God bless you.

If everything goes well, my family and I will be moving to Malaysia middle of next year and at the moment I need to find out what are the procedures involved and get ourselves ready for MALAYSIA...

Malaysia here we come!!!

If you too would like to consider Malaysia as your 2nd home, visit http://www.mm2h.gov.my/ for all the information you might need.

And if you do choose Malaysia as your 2nd home...Welcome. :-)

Must Watch: Merantau

In Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Yuda a skilled practitioner of Silat Harimau is in the final preparations to begin his "Merantau" a century's old rites-of-passage to be carried out by the community's young men that will see him leave the comforts of his idyllic farming village and make a name for himself in the bustling city of Jakarta. After a series of setbacks leave Yuda homeless and uncertain about his new future, a chance encounter results in him defending the orphaned Astri from becoming the latest victim of a European human trafficking ring led by the wildly psychotic, Ratger and his right-hand man Lars. With Ratger injured in the mêlée and seeking both his "merchandise" and bloody retribution, Yuda's introduction to this bustling city is a baptism of fire as he is forced to go on the run with Astri and her younger brother Adit as all the pimps and gangsters that inhabit the night hound the streets chasing their every step. With escape seemingly beyond their grasp, Yuda has no choice but to face his attackers in an adrenaline charged, jaw-dropping finale. Written by PT. Merantau Films

Review from www.firstshowing.net

Who doesn't love a good martial arts movie? Over the last few years, it was Thai martial artist Tony Jaa who was the most popular here in the US, then JeeJa made her debut last year in Chocolate. Now it's my pleasure to introduce you to Iko Uwais in a Indonesian martial arts film called Merantau. I don't want to say much more besides that you just need to drop what you're doing and check this out, because it kicks some serious ass. What I love about this more than most other martial arts movies is that it seems incredibly realistic, like I could just be watching this in person, and I love that style. So check this out right now!

And it doesn't hurt even just one bit that the lead actor is oh-so-yummy.

p.s: he's on facebook.

'Lara Croft' and Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat dibuka malam

- AP

This is where my friends and I will head to next year, InsyaAllah. The location for much of the filming of Angelina Jolies adventures in Tomb Raider. (macam dah boleh imagine je gaya posing nanti? hahaha...)

Saya bersyukur Allah kurniakan saya tubuh badan seperti sekarang, kerna kalau tubuh saya se'hot' sebergetah semenggoda tubuh minah di atas ini, barangkali saya akan tambah banyak dosa, asyik nak mendedah aurat jek.

Alhamdulillah. :-)

Cinta Biasa? Bukan!

Film Indonesia Terbaru - Film Bukan Cinta Biasa adalah film anyar bergenre komedi. Dengan menggandeng Olivia Lubis Jensen, Ferdy ‘Element’ Taher, Wulan Guritno, Rocky dan juga penyanyi solo Afgan Syah Reza, tiga serangkai (sutradara; Benni Setiawan, produser; Herman Harson dan Naldy Nazar), mengemas ‘Bukan Cinta Biasa’ sebagai film ringan yang humoris tapi tetap sarat makna moral.

Sinopsis Film Bukan Cinta Biasa :

Hahaha...

Teringat kenangan silam. Ull, masih ingatkah mug yang kamu beri untuk ultah saya waktu itu (gile lama tak ingat how many years ago), beserta teddy bear kecil yang akhirnya diberi nama Ferdy sempena Abang Ferdy kita? Masihkah kau ingat? Ahaks.
Kak Im, masihkah ingat sewaktu di bandara Abang Ferdy bertanya, "semalam kenapa tak menari? Berdiri diam aja?" Masihkah ingat sewaktu menonton secara live Dari Studio 1 dia hampir menarik saya ke atas pentas menyanyi bersama? Hahaha...tak nak lah nanti mak saya tengok tak mahu mengaku saya anaknya.

Masihkah ingat betapa kita kaget ternyata dia yang disangka bujang trang tang tang rupanya ayah kepada 4 anak?

Must see this movie!

Malaysia kembali jadi pengeluar automotif utama Asean: MAA

- Bernama

She's SO Farina!

Cambodian-Muslim Woman Earns Grant for US Studies
By VOA Khmer, Sothearith Im
Original report from Washington
25 May 2009

Ohio University graduate student So Farina is a Cambodian Muslim. She was awarded the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund Grant on May 19 in Washington, one of ten award recipients worldwide. She is the first Cambodian to receive the award. So Farina impressed the selection committee with her research on Muslim women under the Khmer Rouge.

She hopes to found a center for gender studies under the Documentation Center of Cambodia. The $12,000 grant will help her focus on her studies, she said in an interview with VOA Khmer.

So Farina is a graduate student in Southeast Asian Studies at the Center for International Studies at Ohio University, where a professor encouraged her to apply.

He “warned me that the scholarship was very competitive,” she said. “He asked me to look at the criteria and whether it matched my qualifications. When I saw the criteria, I knew my qualifications fit the criteria.”

So Farina impressed the MMMF selection committee with her research, “Muslim Cambodian Women’s Experience in Khmer Rouge Regime,” and her future potential for creating an oral history project, which she has been working on for about five years.

“First, it not only helps me solve financial problems, but also gives me value, respect, and hope, because it enables me to focus on my study and work more to make my dream a reality,” So Farina said.

The MMMF awards grants to women from developing countries who are studying subjects that benefit lives of women and children. The applicants must be enroll at accredited institutions in the United States and Canada at the time they submit their applications. They must use the
grant toward their studies.

Sarah Brau, a member of MMMF’s board of directors, said there are a lot of competent applicants applying for MMMF grants. Besides their impressive qualifications, successful candidates must go back either to their home countries or other developing countries.

“We have tremendous applicants of all ages, and they have to have had experience volunteering or working for women or children in their own countries, and they have to already be here studying in the US or Canada when we add our scholarship money to them,” she said.

Brau said So Farina was the first candidate from Cambodia selected for the scholarship and was chosen for the intellectual ability to tackle difficult issues and pursue an educational goal. She encouraged women from Cambodia to apply for the scholarship.

“She was an extraordinary candidate,” Brau said. “She had exerted a great deal of intellectual rigor…and she both had intellectual analysis, the heart of the problems, and had been able to take a small step to implement the solution.”

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund was founded in 1981 to honor the life of Margaret Craig McNamara, whose husband was World Bank President from 1968 to 1981. The MMMF has awarded 134 grants to women from 57 countries since 1983. MMMF scholarship is available at mmmf-grants.org.

Congratulations, Farina! :-D

ku hanya pemimpi kecil yang berangan
tuk merubah nasibnya…

Masih Ada

Hari-hariku lewati hanya sendiri tanpa kekasih
Tapi tetap ku nikmakti indahnya hari tanpa tambatan hati

Aku ingin menjadi setitik awan kecil dinadi
Bersama mentari
Walaupun kusendiri tapi aku masih ada
Masih ada cinta dihati

Kadang aku merindukan
Merindukan sentuhan
Sentuhan wanita

Ingin ku curahkan semua
Semua hasrat dijiwa
Yang t’lah lama ku pendam

Aku ingin menjadi setitik awan kecil dinadi
Bersama mentari
Walaupun kusendiri tapi aku masih ada
Masih ada cinta dihati

Hari-hariku lewati hanya sendiri tanpa kekasih
Walaupun kusendiri
tapi ku masih bisa bahagia

Walaupun ku sendiri tapi aku masih ada cinta di hati...isn't that the most important thing?

Ada Apa Dengan Kuala Kubu Bharu?

"Boring btol Spore ni. Kuala Kubu Bharu lg best rasenya..."

*hinst hinst kembang kuncup hidung*

Ada apa dengan Kuala Kubu Bharu?

Kuala Kubu Bharu (alternately known as Kuala Kubu Baru, Kuala Kubu Bahru or Kuala Kubu Baharu; commonly referred to as KKB), is a town in Hulu Selangor district, Selangor, Malaysia. It was built after the town of Kuala Kubu was destroyed in a flood in 1883. Kuala Kubu Bharu is located on top of a hill. It is the district capital of Hulu Selangor.

Flood caused by a broken dam
Previously, there was a town called Kuala Kubu nearby. In February 1883 the Kuala Kubu town was destroyed by a great flood caused by a broken dam near the town. Many civilians drowned or lost their home. The flood victims included a district officer of Kuala Kubu during the British era named Sir Cecil Ranking. The old town was severely flooded and most of the old town's facilities were damaged beyond repair. A Buddhist temple and a mosque survived the flood. The old town has since been known as Ampang Pecah, or Broken Dam in the Malay language. The tragedy was probably known as Tragedi Kuala Kubu by local civilians.

The Aftermath
After the tragedy, the British government decided to build a new town near the remains of Kuala Kubu. The new town was named Kuala Kubu Bharu, with Bharu meaning "new" in the Malay language. Residential houses have been developed since the 1980s in the previously abandoned old town, or Ampang Pecah. Most inhabitants are from the nearby new town of Kuala Kubu Bharu. The redevelopment of Ampang Pecah, the site of the old town, was a natural progression on the organic growth of the new township of Kuala Kubu Bharu. A monument was built here to commemorate the Kuala Kubu tragedy.

Adopted from Tragedi Kuala Kubu 1883
- Buku Rekod Malaysia Edisi Kedua, Ghulam Jie M Khan

Note: The grave that is found in the Kuala Kubu Rest House, which is located on Jalan Syed Mashor, is the grave where the hand of Sir Cecil Ranking was interred . Why the hand? Well legend has it that the great flood that destroyed Kuala Kubu was a consequence of the killing of a white crocodile by Sir Ranking himself. And when the flood subsided, that's all that was left of his remains. Well there you go. If you read the inscription on the grave site, it reads something like "Here lies the hand of Sir Cecil Ranking".

"Kalau pergi Kuala Kubu
Tulis nama atas batu
Saban hari ku menanti waktu
Pulang segera kepada ku..."

*joget lambak lagi...*

It's Bi-Lingual!

I've been following Good News from Indonesia for quite some time now, it's refreshing to see someone who's totally in love with his country, bringing ONLY good news (hence, the name) for the world see. Great job! As a Malaysian, this blog serves as a mirror to see how deep is my own love for my Malaysia. (Seriously, I AM A PROUD MALAYSIAN.) Thank you, GNFI.

I think it's totally and utterly cool, that a fellow reader of GNFI, has decided to develop another blog, exactly like GOOD NEWS FROM INDONESIA...

p.s: they are on Twitter now as well.

(this entry has been written entirely in English, in case anyone in their not so right mind decided to make a version of my blog in another language. Hahaha...nahh, they'd probably have a tough time. Eceh...as if anyone ever would! Dream on, Farina! Hahaha...but, you know, just in case? :p)

I shall now end this entry with this song...

To know Malaysia, is to love Malaysia
People smiling everywhere
Showing you how much they care
To know Malaysia, is to love Malaysia
It's true

This land, so beautiful
It will steal your heart away
This land is paradise
And it's only, only a smile away

To know Malaysia, is to love Malaysia
In this land where dreams come true
Malaysia welcomes you
To know Malaysia, is to love Malaysia
It's true, it's true, it's true...

Last Saturday, invited by Faie, Kotok and Baby Hannah for a belated birthday lunch disini

The Nanny and the baby

Hahaha..

Malamnya. Pak Mi berbaik hati memberikan 4 keping tiket menonton Konsert Final AF7 live di Stadium Bukit Jalil! Hahaha...sebetulnya si bongsu, Fadila, yang nak sangat pergi, nak tengok Sultan Akim. Tapi kakak dia pun excited juga. Hahaha...saya die hard fan Hafiz! (Okay, jujur...pada awalnya suka Akim juga. Comel! Hehehe...)

Ok, saya mengaku, saya memang sucker for AF. Dari season 1, dah jadi macam family occasion to come back every Saturday lepak ramai-ramai dengan mak dan adik-adik. Tu belum lagi masa final AF1, sampai redah rumah tok ketua kampung di Lenggong. Hahaha...oh, masa muda yang indah.

Tapi inilah pertama kali saya tengok final secara live. Suasananya sangat mengujakan! Best best best!

Dannnn...Hafiz menanggggggg!!! Saya sukaaaaaaa!!!

Itu Hafiz! Nun jauh di bawah sana. Hehehe

Afundi Hafiz! Walaupun rupamu tidak ku kenal, tetapi rambutmu tetap menjadi pojaan hatiku!

Eheh. Along. Ini, kenalkan... Mak Akim. Ada gaya macam menantu kesayangan memeluk mertua tak? (larikkk...)

Tak dapat peluk orangnya, peluk gambar pun cukuplah. Hahahaha...

Meremang bulu roma okay! Peace~~

Tak Tahu Antara Dua

Guy 1: "Eh Farina, ke HK yukk?? Ntar kamu liatin ya klo ada promo, kabar2in."

Guy 2: "Farina. Dipendekkan cerita, saya ke Perhentian, 1hb ni. Kalau awak nak ikut, nak ambil lesen diving, bagitau k, saya booking kan chalet. Saya 2 bulan kat sana, sebab nak buat master. So bila-bila lah, k? Seeloknya masa saya kat sana lah, saya ikut awak, saya boleh ambilkan gambar, dan video sekali. Kalau orang lain mungkin saya charge, untuk sobat, free je."

Perbezaan kedua-dua situasi di atas:

1. Kedua-duanya, butuh wang.
2. Kedua-duanya, menarik. Amat menarik. Saya bercakap mengenai percutiannya, ya.
3. Kedua-dua lelaki di atas, cara mereka sebut nama saya, boleh membuat jantung saya ter'skip' satu denyutan.
4. Kedua-dua lelaki di atas, kacak. Amat kacak. (pada pandangan mata saya lah)
5. Kedua-dua lelaki di atas, suami orang.

Capek dehhh...

Ada sesiapa berminat nak bersama saya ambil lesen menyelam sambil minum air Juli (hopefully) nanti?

Happiness Is The Truth

Been a while since I felt so deliriously happy to the point that I fell like telling the whole world how I feel, and why. But, having been...
