Let Bygones be Bygones

Melupakan Cobaan Yang Telah Berlalu

from Kumpulan Situs-Situs Islam

MediaMuslim.

(Al-Baqarah : 286) .

Siapa Yang Sial?

Malingsial vs. Indonsial

agak tercekat sehabis tarawih melihat betapa manusia kedua negara kembali saling adu sumpah serapah, di bulan ramadhan. padahal keduanya mengaku negara beragama.

tiit-- "lu klik malingsia.com deh, parah abis!!!"

Pendet Dance Clip Producer To Be Reprimanded

Malaysia to reprimand Pendet dance clip producer
By Andi Abdussalam
Source: ANTARA News

Pendet Dance. (ANTARA/*)Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Malaysian government has promised to reprimand a Singapore-based production house which produced an advertisement for its tourism promotion that led to strong protests in Indonesia because it used the Balinese Pendet dance without official permit from the Indonesian government.

"They have promised to reprimand the production house which produced the advertisement," Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik said on Tuesday.

A series of strong protests have been launched at home against the depiction of the Pendet dance in the Malaysian tourism advertisement broadcast in the Discovery Channel program under the title "Enigmatic Malaysia".

The welcome dance performed by women in Balinese costume appeared in a "Visit Malaysia Year" advertisement and was broadcast many times.

On Monday, the minister summoned Malaysia`s deputy ambassador to Indonesia, Amran Mohammad Zin with regard to the advertisement. During the meeting the Malaysian side explained that the ad was produced by a private production house. The Malaysian side promised to reprimand the production house.

In the meantime, a Malaysian official said from Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday said that the advertisement was not produced by Malaysia`s culture and tourism ministry (KRU) but by the Singapore-based Discovery Channel.

"The ad which is part of a documentary film series of Enigmatic Malaysia program were not produced by us but by the Singapore-based Discovery Channel," President and Chief Executive Officer of KRU Group Norman Abdul Halim said.

Halim, who was accompanied by Ketut Wiryadinata of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Culture, was explaining the matter to the Indonesian press at the Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

"We knew that the ad had sparked protests and anger in Indonesia only after we were contacted by Indonesian newsmen yesterday," Halim said.

He said that his side had contacted the Discovery Channel, which he said had also withdrawn the promotion ad and replaced it with a new one.

KRU has produced six documentary films on Enigmatic Malaysia which were broadcast by 23 countries throughout the world. The themes of the documentary films are "The Malakan Portuguese - Preserving Their Heritate," "Bajau Laut - Nomad of The Sea", "Keris - The Myth & the Magic," "Kellie`s Castle - Myth & Mystery", "Batik" and "Wau".

"In the Batik (traditional Javanese cloth), the documentary film clearly explained that Malaysian batik originates from the Javanese batik," Halim, who claimed his parents are descendants from North Sumatra, said.

Ketut Wiryadinata admitted he had watched the documentary film on batik. He said that the documentary film produced revealed the fact that the Malaysian batik originated from Java.

"Our meeting today (with Halim) has cleared the point of misunderstanding on the issue where Malaysia allegedly has claimed Bali`s Pendet dance. This is not true at all because the promotional ad was made by the Singapore-based Discovery Channel for the promotion of a documentary film in the Enigmatic Malaysia program. We will report this to the minister," he said.

The Discovery Channel meanwhile admitted that it had made a mistake and promised to apologize directly to the Indonesian minister for culture and tourism, Jero Wacik. In a letter sent through e-mail to the Indonesian director general for arts, culture and film affairs, the Discovery Channel explained that the promotional advertisement in the documentary film was not produced by KRU.

Discovery Channel`s regional director for advertising sales, Angie Santa Maria admitted that the production of the ad which depicted the Balinese Pendet dance was a mistake done by the Discovery Channel promotional staffs. Therefore, she promised to apologize directly to the Indonesian minister of culture and tourism.

The appearance of the Pendet dance in the Malaysia Visit Year promotion program has in the past several days sparked protests in Indonesia and become the focus of attention of the media in the country.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jero Wacik therefore thanked the country`s press and artists for their concern and greatest attention. "I have to thank them for their greatest attention to the matter," the minister said.

He said that the press efforts to defend the nation was clearly seen when the Pendet dance was used by Malaysia in its tourism promotion without permission from Indonesia. "It is reasonable for us to be upset but we should not take anarchic actions. We should show that we are a civilized nation. So, we should react in a respectable and civilized way," the minister said.

Indonesia has sent a letter to the Malaysian government to ask for explanations on the use of Balinese traditional pendet dance in promoting its tourism industry.

According to an Indonesian cultural official, Indonesia has sent a letter not to protest but to ask for an explanation or clarification from the Malaysian government.

"This is not a protest note but a letter requesting a clarification from the Malaysian government," Ketut Wiryadinata, a special emissary from Indonesia`s culture and tourism ministry, said in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.(*)

Sadaqah for Iftar with the Children of Rumah Nur Salam

Dear gentle readers,

A group of friends have decided to raise some funds to sponsor iftar for the children of Rumah Nur Salam. Rumah Nur Salam, which includes Pusat Aktiviti Kanak Kanak, Chow Kit, is a 24 hour activity center and 'safehouse' that wants to provide a 'safe,' healthy and loving environment for all children under the age of 18, living or loitering, in and around the Chow Kit area of KL. Children registered at the center are given food, shelter and are exposed to educational, health and recreational activities and programs that otherwise may not be accessible to them.

TENTATIVE PLAN FOR IFTAR RUMAH NUR SALAM

Date & Venue:
Sunday 30th August 2009, Rumah Nur Salam

Time: 6 pm

In a Hadeeth Narrated Ibn Masud:
I heard the Prophet (S.A.W.) saying, "There is no envy except in two: a person whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it in the right way, and a person whom Allah has given wisdom (i.e. religious knowledge) and he gives his decisions accordingly and teaches it to others."

In another Hadeeth:
The Prophet (S.A.W.) said: 'Charity is a necessity for every Muslim'. He was then asked: 'What if a person has nothing?' The Prophet replied: 'He should work with his own hands for his benefit and then give something out of such earnings in charity.' The Companions asked: 'What if he is not able to work?' The Prophet said: 'He should help poor and needy persons'. The Companions further asked 'What if he cannot do even that?' The Prophet said 'He should urge others to do good'. The Companions said 'What if he lacks that also?' The Prophet said 'He should check himself from doing evil. That is also charity'.

If you would like to join and contribute your sadaqah in this holy month of Ramadhan, please get in touch with me either by phone, facebook, ym, or email. Whichever suits you best.

We thank you in advance for your donation. Only Allah can repay your kindness.

Thank you very much. Have a good day.

Stats

According to http://www.friendshipstats.com I have 612 friends, 492 more than average. 36% are male, 64% are female. 131 are single, 286 are dating or married. If I contracted a deadly variant of flu, I would likely infect 14 people, 2 of whom would die. When I share something on Facebook, it is typically viewed by 34 people. If I died today, an estimated 606 people would try to attend my funeral. Based on my Facebook profile, I have a 94% probability of getting married. I am likely to earn US$2.7 million and have 2.6 children over my lifetime. Calculate your own stats at http://www.friendshipstats.com.

From Facebook.

The one thing that made me smile is, out of 612 friends that I have, an estimated of 606 ppl would attend my funeral, if I die today.

I feel loved, you know? :-)

Oh that, and the 94% probability of getting married. Hahaha.

note: how on earth can you have 2.6 children??

Symbiosis

Honestly, I am tired of hearing my nation being affectionately called, Malingsia. Ever since I was young, I have been taught to embrace and accept the multicultural of Malaysia, and how this small country is a melting pot of so many customs, traditions and culture from so many ethnicity. Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Buginese, Javanese, so on so forth.

Looking back in history, there are so many links between us and our neighbouring countries. Before we were Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Phillipines, Thailand, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Before, when we were just people of the Malay Archipelago who depended heavily on trade and strong political ties between these different islands and people. And the Islam came, and more people travel to spread the teachings of Islam. These were the days when the current country borders means nothing to them. People travel, people move about, people settle down, people assimilate, bringing with them their culture, food, history and background.

Which is why, I don't find it strange that our children (and your truly too) grew up to the song Rasa Sayang, get bundled up in a comfortable wrap of batik to keep them safe and warm, or even learn how to dance Kuda Kepang for their school events (Kuda Kepang, incidentally, was once a form of totemic worship, had strong links with spirit possession and often dancers went into a trance-like state. However with the Islamisation of Malaysia, this dance now generally renders the tale of nine Javanese men who spread the Islamic faith in the interior of Java. This dance is performed in accompaniment to a rich and exotic rendition of traditional music played with indigenous instruments such as gongs, tambourines and angklungs.) Ahh, angklung.

Now, let's take a walk down the memory lane shall we? (Of course, these are not MY memories. I am not THAT ancient, hello!)
Malacca History

Malacca was founded by Parameswara, a Srivijayan prince of Palembang who fled Sumatra following a Majapahit attack in 1377. He found his way to Malacca c. 1400 where he found a good port accessible in all seasons and on the strategically located narrowest point of the Malacca Straits.

Who are the Orang Jawa?

The Orang Jawa ('people of Java', also known as 'Javanese') migrated from Central Java, Indonesia, to Malaysia from 1880 to 1930. They migrated to seek a new life away from the Dutch colonists who ruled Indonesia at that time. Today the Orang Jawa live throughout Peninsular Malaysia in parts of Perak, Selangor, and Kedah. There are also isolated communities in coastal areas of Sabah. Some Jawa have even gained influential positions in society. The Former Chief Minister of Selangor traces his roots back to Orang Jawa ancestors.

note: The Former Chief Minister of Selangor, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo even claimed that his beauty secret for his youthful and glowing complexion is tempe. Tempe, the staple food of Java!

Who are the Bugis?

The Bugis people are acclaimed sea traders and legendary warriors from Indonesia. They first came to Malaysia in the 16th century and settled in various parts of Malaysia in the states of Johor, Selangor, and Pulau Pinang. Francis Light once called them "the best merchants" among the eastern islands. By the 1700s, they dominated Selangor's politics and economy and eventually established the Sultanate of Selangor; the current Sultan traces his roots back to the Bugis Empire. The 18th century has been called, the "Age of the Bugis." There are several Bugis communities scattered along Sabah's southeast coast.

Right, here's a recap. Malacca was founded by a prince from Palembang, Javanese migrated from Central Java, Bugis people first came to Malaysia in the 16th century, don't even get me started on the Banjars, The Acehs, the Minangs, etcetera etcetera etcetera. And there's a place in southeastern West Java, Indonesia named Tasikmalaya.

Hey, even myself, a myself, Malaysian with Buginese and Acehnese blood. How do you define me then?

Do you still not realize the historical ties between our two nations?

I found an interesting link here by Souza Nurafrianto. And I quote,
The problem here is that Malaysia claimed that Pendet originated from the Malays, which is most of the people domiciled in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Brunei. Malaysia have never said that the dance originated from Malaysia and I'm not sure that any dance or culture can be patented, and so be forbidden to be displayed in other countries. Logically, cultural identity is an abstract identity that has no creator. Culture is the emulation of human behavior and the rules that occurs naturally.

No, I am not claiming that any cultures nor dances are rightfully Malaysian. All I am saying is, please realize that the ties we have goes beyond sharing country borders. Ask any Malays in Malaysia about their bloodlines, most of them could probably trace it back to Indonesia. And I say this even to the people of my nation who sometimes get too carried away with their harsh words, we need each other. We are one, we are siblings, we are so much similar in so many ways, perhaps even more than you care to realize.

So shall we bury the hatchet and try to live in harmony, happily ever after?

Petua Puasa

(v) JANGAN minum air sambil makan.

(i) Makan terlalu banyak (waktu sahur dan berbuka)
(iv) Mengulangi makan sepanjang malam.

(i) Kopi dan teh.
(ii) Air paip masak yang tidak ditapis.
(iii) Makanan yang ada bahan pengawet, pewarna, perasa tiruan seperti burger, sosej, mee segera, air tin & kotak, air squash, nugget dan seumpamanya.
(iv) Makanan masin perlu dielakkan semasa berpuasa kerana ia menyebabkan air bertakung dalam badan (water retention)
(v) Merokok

Fasa-fasa puasa yang berjaya:

Fasa pertama (2-3hari):
Perut akan terasa lapar, badan cepat letih, cepat marah kerana kadar glukosa dalam darah rendah

Fasa kedua (3-14 hari):
Kurang selera makan, senang gelap mata, nafas berbau, lidah menjadi putih atau berdaki manakala badan menjadi lesu.

Fasa ketiga(14-akhir puasa):

(i) Makan banyak (terutamanya daging, berempah, berlemak dan berminyak)
(ii) Makan kerap
(iii) Kuih-muih yang payah dihadam
(iv) Air yang mengandungi pewarna, perasa tiruan

Manfaat puasa yang berkekalan:

(i) Kurang makan kerana perut dah kecut
(ii) Kesihatan bertambah baik

Reap the chances given by Allah dan semoga ibadah kita semua diterima Yang Maha Esa..Amin

Salam...

Cinta Sambal Belacan

kalau anda suka makan ikan parang
bila makan haruslah berhati2
takut kalau tersengkang tulangnya
kalau anda suka bermain dgn cinta
jaga2 jgn sampai hati luka
kerana cinta byk godaanya
hati2 jangan sampai terluka
walau pedas hingga mengalir air mata masih mau dimakan jua
cinta jangan dibuat macam goreng pisang
sungguh enak bila makan panas2
bila ia sejuk jadi kurang enak
hohoho.. hilang sedapnya

Hanya 300 orang tonton persembahan Afgan
Oleh RAJA INTAN DIANNA RAJA AZAHAM
dianna.azaham@utusan.com.my

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Konsert Illuminight - A Light Beat Of Love diakhiri dengan persembahan dari Maliq & D'Essentials selama satu jam.

nota: kesian brondong manisku. apapun, you were so hot that nite! walaupun hancur hatiku bila kau mencium yang lain. sob sob.

Salam Ramadhan!

Selamat Menyambut Kedatangan Ramadhan!

Jom sahur?

Eceh.

nota: raya nanti macam nak buat open house either on 3rd or 4th October lah. Hahaha...booking siap2!

Phew! That was close!

Alkisah.

Tadi malam saya sedang berbicara di telefon tatkala mendengar bunyi gegak gempita. Bak kata Jiran Sebelah, "macam bunyi rasaksa seyh!". Kerana sudah hampir tengah malam, saya abaikan sahaja. Takut weh!

Rumah blackout. Ah, sudah. Takut, takut. Tarik selimut buat-buat tidur.

Sejam kemudian, ibu saya mengetuk pintu kamar.

Katanya, ada pokok tumbang. Kena kereta adik saya.

Astaga!

Dan sewaktu pulang, hati saya tergerak untuk parking di belakang kereta adik saya instead of beside it where I usually park. Kalau tidak, my car would be directly at the space where the tree fell. Looking at the tree, tak mustahil memang total damage lah!

Untungnya, kereta adik saya cuma dihempap dahan pokok. Some minor scratches and kena getah pokok.

So dia bawa kereta saya. Hampeh. My car too, cuma kena some minor scrathes. Huhu. Kesiankenarimerahkesayangan.

Untungnya, anak buah jiran sebelah keluar minum malam tadi.

Rockstar sekali!

Untungnya, Alhamdulillah, semuanya okay!

nota: I can't help wonder if this has got anything to do with monyet yang berdendam itu. Mustahil, bukan?

A Reason, A Season or A Lifetime?

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.

When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season!

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.

For Sale

Adegan 1: Lunch bersama rakan sekolah lama di Noodle Station

her: babe, gula memang tak ada kat pasaran ke?
me: hmm? entah *jungkit bahu* kau tak ada gula kat rumah ke?
her: adalah lagi sepaket.
me: kalau tak ada...ambil kat rumah aku ah.
spoken like a true tokan gula, kan.

Adegan 2: Terserempak Tante bersama teman-teman arisannya di Resep Rahsia.

Tante Saya: hello honey...eh sugar. *to her friends* Ini lah, anak Nani yang kerja kilang gula tu!
Tante 1: ehhh, Auntie nak beli gula!
me: err...nak gula apa, Auntie? Berapa banyak? Kalau banyak-banyak, sorry tak dapat (sebab saya tahu Tante 1 memang jual kuih raya)
Tante 2: Auntie nak 4, 5 kilo jek
me: oh boleh Auntie. no problem.
Tante 3: yang fine sugar?
me: Tak, Auntie.
Tante 2: Boleh, Auntie nak. How much?
me: nanti saya kira. *to my Tante* I will send it to your place eh?
*larikkkkk*

Hahaha...contrary to popular belief, saya takde lah pergi sorok gula lepas tu jual at a profit!

But if you do find your house kehabisan stock gula, lagi-lagi nak2 bulan puasa ni, lepas tu dah dekat raya ni kan...you know lah who to call. Hahaha.

Bak kata Peon, rumah kat Jalan Gasing tu sedia menanti.

Eceh.

Eh. Biar betul??

Pagi-pagi ke kantor, telat 10 minit.

Salah sendiri, bangun telat.

Sampai pondok guard, kena check suhu baru boleh masuk.

Takdehal, saya yakin saya sihat ini hari.

Sebelum sampai turn makcik tu nak check suhu, saya dah berangan. Besok lusa, kalau malas kerja...akan saya usahakan biar suhu badan naik then makcik tu tak bagi masuk office boleh balik tidur. Yeay.

Sampai turn, makcik tu masukkan menatang tu dalam telinga.

Tengok-tengok...

Cinta Jangan Kau Pergi

A while back, a friend tried to convince me that a newcomer in the Indonesian music scene is better than my beloved Brondong Manis. Mosok sih? Gak percaya. Mana mungkin lebih manis dari Afgan? My friend insisted. Katanya his name is Vidi Aldiano, and I must give him a listen.

Oh Tuhan. Mengkoleksi brondong.

Kebayang gak sih, gimana tawa Brian dan Duta klo nanti tau? Bisa berguling2 di tanah sambil teriak-teriak, "Tante Farina! Tante Farina!"

Oh gosh. Nggak banget.

Age aside, these 2 guys are pretty good.

Vidi Aldiano in his debut album, did a remake of Dato' Sheila Majid's 'Cinta Jangan Kau Pergi'.

My verdict? His vocal is good, I have no complaints on that. Cuma, I feel his emotions gak sampai, his voice lacks the conviction that he's REALLY begging his love not to walk away. Maybe because of his young age, or kurang pengalaman bercinta? Eceh kengkonon nak komen macam pengkritik Akademi Fantasia.

Nevertheless, it's worth a listen. HE is worth a listen.

nota: sila ah download. hehe.

Tinggalkan diriku sendiri
Cinta jangan kau lari

Tanpa cinta dan kasih... sayang"

afgan masih termuah di hati

Ahad, Ogos 16, 2009

Apa kata hati?

Aneh.

Hati diam.

Membisu.

Ternyata demi melakukan hal yang betul, hati saya hancur. Mati.

Sigh.

I guess, that is something I have to learn to live with.

I cried.

nota bak kata faizal tahir (walau saya sedar, memang dia tak baca blog saya pun): "aku lemah tanpa kamu, ku ingin mu dampingi ku, aku sadari aku bukan terbaik 'tuk dirimu"

nota untuk semua orang lain: saya okay. sungguh.

Bunga

"Tak usah ditanya mengapa ku pilih
Bunga yang mewangi terliar berseri
Yang tak akan nampak di mata pun
Berwarni dari lain-lain
Segan untuk aku sapa
Walau ada maksud yang ku sembunyi

Pernah ku mencuba terima seadanya
Sayang ia selalu calarkan sudut hati ku
Hingga lelah jiwa ku dikecewa
Yang tak mungkin berpaling kembali
Namun ku yakinkan nanti
Tuhan pasti beri gantinya

Ku mohon kau yang indah pada mu
Untuk ku tatap menawar resah ku
Kekal aku di situ harungi cinta

Dan aku pohonkan yang baik
Bersantun kata kata tentang cinta
Bicarakan rindu pada ku
Mengharum selamanya "

Heard this song on Sinar FM last nite on my way back after a rendezvous with Soraya. It somewhat reminds me of the phase when I had a HUGE crush on Ezad, the lead singer. I can't really explain why I really liked the guy, maybe it was his sense of humor ("I love you very strong!" hahaha) that made me go anyayayayanyaaa.

And they grow...

I remember when discussing about the bombing in Jakarta last month with some friends, the reaction is similar to the writer of this article, sadness, sympathy...surreal, disbelief. However, there were also whispers, wondering if the rupiah against ringgit rate would come down, since these people were planning to go to Indonesia in the near future.

And, alas! That didn't happen. Teoh Kok Lin shares with us why.

Indonesia may grow as fast as China
Singular Vision - By Teoh Kok Lin

Indonesia – the next economic powerhouse

I was in Singapore on July 17, meeting up with some fund manager friends when news broke about the bombings in Jakarta. The initial reaction was of sadness and sympathy for the victims and Indonesia in general.

We also thought that it could be an opportunity to invest more in Indonesia’s stock market if it were to correct sharply.

The Jakarta Stock Exchange opened down 2% that morning but quickly recovered within hours and closed the day down by only 0.5%.

While the hunch did not turn out to be correct, Indonesia’s stock market reaction illustrates that investors today have much more confidence in the country’s management.

Similarly, Indonesia’s government also clearly projected its financial confidence later that day when it went ahead and successfully sold 35 billion yen (US$375mil) 10-year samurai bonds to global investors.

Indonesia is no longer a developing economy dependent largely on agriculture and mining. Politically and economically, it has been transformed since the end of the Asian financial crisis in 1999.

My many visits to Indonesia over the past few years, doing the leg work of speaking to many company directors, investment analysts, bankers and so on, have convinced me that Indonesia is on a very strong and progressive path, especially in the last two to three years.

In a way, Indonesia is in a similar situation as China was 10 years ago, when the vast Chinese population moved beyond the subsistence level and consumption power was increasing with accumulated wealth as the economy grew at a fast pace.

Today, Indonesia may already be on the cusp of such a transition.

We know Indonesia has the basic ingredients for success, among which are:

- The fourth largest population in the world at 226 million – which also means a big domestic consumer base;

- Huge natural resources – Indonesia is the largest producer of palm oil in the world and is a major producer of crude oil, natural gas, iron ore, tin, lead, gold, etc.; and

- Young urban population – 50% of Indonesians live in urban areas (a rate higher than in China or India) and more than 52% of the population is aged 20-54. Dynamic young urban population’s productivity growth would be at a faster pace with the right economic environment.

There are compelling reasons to believe that with the right catalysts, Indonesia may grow as fast as China or faster in the years ahead.

Among the key catalysts for Indonesia to emerge as an economic star in the global economy are:

- Leadership in Jakarta continues to provide political stability and sound economic policies: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono did a good job steering the economy in his first term and he was re-elected with a strong 60% of the popular vote for another five-year term on July 8.

Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party holds the most parliamentary seats (150) and with his coalition holding more than 56% of parliamentary seats, Yudhoyono will have more say now than during his first term when his party held fewer seats (55) than other coalition partners.

The current leadership team has a good track record and credentials in managing the economy; that includes the Vice President-elect Boediono, who was Finance Minister and Central Bank governor before, and the current Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, both of whom are well respected technocrats.

- Infrastructure development: Indonesia has a pressing need for great infrastructure like many developing nations.

The mega infrastructure proposed during the first term of Yudhoyono’s presidency did not take off well, but with Yudhoyono now having greater control over the parliament, this is likely to change.

In response to the economic downturn, Indonesia set aside US$7.5bil in the 2009 budget for infrastructure spending and an additional US$703mil for labour intensive infrastructure projects.

Infrastructure development will help spur economic growth, improve efficiency in Indonesia, much like how such investments boosted the economies of Malaysia in the 1990s and China in 2000s.

- Banking system reform continues to provide the lifeblood for the economy to grow: The banking system underwent drastic reform after the Asian financial crisis with the Indonesia Bank Restructuring Agency, resulting in the demise of insolvent banks and ownership changes in major private banks.

The recapitalisation and reform resulted in one of the most liberalised banking systems in Asia, with little restrictions on foreign ownership.

The banking reform also fostered healthy competition and that in turn has benefited many Indonesian companies and consumers alike.

In Indonesia, the household debt to gross domestic product ratio is 11.2, one of the lowest in the region when compared with Taiwan (53.8), Hong Kong (53.2) or Malaysia (46.7).

This means that consumers not only have room to borrow for large purchases such as cars and homes, but banks also have huge opportunities to sell their loans to Indonesian households.

Ten years ago, banks preferred to lend to big corporations and the average Indonesian would have difficulty getting consumer financing, plus they would have had to pay interest rates in excess of 20% a year.

Today, Indonesian banks are actively courting consumers to borrow from them.

In addition, the bank base lending rates have declined substantially (see chart) and home mortgage rates, for example, are now below 10%, the lowest ever.

- Confidence of Indonesians in their economy and stock markets: People I met over the past two to three years, from senior management of companies to young executives, are confident about the prospects in Indonesia. This is also a reflection of how they overwhelmingly voted for Yudhoyono this past election.

Recent events have proved that Indonesia has not only the economic resilience but also the confidence to be a major economic powerhouse in the future.

Indonesia is moving in the right direction to be a formidable global economic powerhouse.

The rest of Asia should view the emergence of Indonesia not as a threat, but as a motivation for healthy competition.

Just like the emergence of China, which helped advance the economies of North Asia such as Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Macau in the past 20 years, I believe Indonesia’s economic growth in the next decade will do the same for South-East Asia.

Yin & Yang

It's like a breeding ground for illness here at work.

A guy sitting across me is sick with demam campak. And YET he still comes to work. Terketar-ketar mengigil-gigil gementar saya bertanya kepada ibu semalam, have I gotten my demam campak yet?

Phewww, lega. Semalam nak bernafas nak bergerak pun takut. Hahaha...paranoid.

Orang meja sebelah flu pula. Bukan H1N1 but still, these days we can't be too careful. Apa lagi risau mendengar anak buah saya berumur 12 tahun masih di isolation ward in UH, for lung infection. Mohon doa nya ya teman-teman.

And yet.

I feel blessed. Not for the reasons abovementioned, of course.

Bak kata Pokcik,
"then learn to appreciate every aspect of ur being and ppl will start to appreciate urself."

Thank you Allah.

nota: Soraya, thanks for the sesi menelanjangkan masalah tadi malam. I didn't realize how much I needed that. Thank you.
