Azam Tahun 2012

Menjelang tahun 2012, saya ceritakan kepada beberapa kawan terdekat. Azam tahun baru saya, I am converting to CPs.

CP? Menatang apakah itu?

Cloth pads. I must admit, the thought of it intrigued me at first. Semenjak saya aqilbaligh, been using disposable pads, which, to me at least, is uncomfortable. And I wouldn't wanna go into details, Ladies, you'd understand, right? Tapi, what other options do I have? So I bear with the discomfort, bulan demi bulan.

Hahahah...memanglah, terfikir jugak...Kain?? Eh, macam zaman nenek kita dulu-dulu ah! Tak geli ke? Tak kotor ke? Tak bocor ke? Leceh tak nak kena cuci? Macam-macam lagi lah yang bermain di fikiran.

Tapi tau tak, if you menstruate for 33 years (age 12-45) and you use about 20-25 pads per cycle, you will throw away 8,000-10,000 pads! That's a lot of trash - and a lot of money and resources in the landfills. Gila, kan?

Memang, at first nak keluarkan duit beli clothpads ni, bercinta juga. Disposable pads, baru berapa ringgit sangat sepaket. Tapi bayangkan, Cloth pads require only an extra small load of laundry or two each month and can last 5-7 years or more. Compare a dozen reusable menstrual pads to the mountain of tampons or disposables necessary for 5-7 years!

I'm an Accountant, jadi mari kita lihat apa kebaikan menggunakan cloth pads ni, dari segi duit. Hehehe...

If you have an average flow, you likely spend about RM20 a month on disposable menstrual products. Belum lagi kira pantyliners tu, say RM10 sebulan? So, untuk disposable pads and liners, sebulan kita spend RM30 kurang lebih. Using cloth pads will save you money and time. You will need from 6-24 pads in your stash, depending on your flow. It might cost you say, rm400. With proper care, cloth pads will last from 3-7 years or more.

Average cost of 7 years worth of cloth pads: RM400
Cost of 7 years of disposables at an average of RM30 per month: RM2520
Savings of RM2,120 average, or about RM303 per year.

Ok, itu KALAU jangkahayat clothpads tu sampai 7 tahun, which is the best case scenario. Kalau paling cikai pun, 3 tahun, macam mana pulak?

Average cost of 3 years worth of cloth pads: RM400
Cost of 3 years of disposables at an average of RM30 per month: RM1,080
Savings of RM680 average, or about RM227 per year.

That, is still substantial savings, my dear friends.

It took me quite some time to study about cloth pads, thanks to Faatin and Anis who patiently answered all my questions. What did I had to ask? A LOT! hahahaha...tapi still macam tak berapa nak faham jugak, until I thought, what the heck, beli je lah satu starter pack, lepas tu we'll see how it goes from there.

My 1st cloth pads were from Baby Snowdrop. Bought their Minky starter kit, which consisted of 1 heavy stream pad, 1 mild deluge pad, 1 light mist pad, and 2 pantyliners. And it cost me rm132 (incl delivery charges)

Pic from Baby Snowdrop's FB.

To be honest, I had no actual reason for choosing this when I did. It looks nice, but so does many other brands. It has Minky outer layer which many says is more comfortable and absorbent, dan paling penting, stain-resistant. Plus inner core nya the core is bamboo fleece with PUL (waterproof) liner. hahahaha...confusing, kan?

In plain words, cloth pad dari Baby Snowdrop ni, lembut gila, and despite being quite bulky (I later found out that it's much bulkier than other brands) it's still really, really comfortable to wear, stayed dry even when the flow's really heavy. And true to its word, it's stain resistant!

I went through a period cycle solely on this set, and I did okay altho I wish I had more, so tak adalah lepas cuci tiap hari kena sidai dekat2 kipas biar cepat kering so esok boleh pakai lagi hahaha...

and so, I went and bought my next set.

Bisky Bosky Starter pack, RM150 which includes 4 regular pads, 2 light pads, and 3 pantyliners, foc 1 wetbag. Saya topup dengan 3 heavy pads dengan harga Rm100 for 3.

My Super-Brand-New stash, bak kata Kak Qhatijah, the maker!

Have only tried its pantyliners so far, dan saya suka!

Just bought another set, kali ini from Mamapatch. They were having CNY sales, set trial yang bernilai RM83 consists of 1 night pad, 2 regular pads, and 3 pantyliners dijual pada harga RM65. Cannot tahan, terus beli.

It might not seem like much, but my stash is enough to last me several years. Jika dan hanya jika, saya tak meroyan pergi beli lagi lah. And that, is the only risk. Sebab cloth pads ni comel-comel sangat, rasa macam nak beli semua!

So, in a nutshell, kenapa saya menggunakan clothpads:

1. Selesa: Saya segan nak go into detail on how really, really comfortable it is compared to disposable pads/liners. It feels just like wearing cotton panties! Ladies, if you want to know more, ask me.

2. Senang nak guna: The snaps are very convenient and easy to put on your panties, and bila lipat for storage/after usage, just lipat2 jadi square, comel sangat!

3. Senang nak cuci: If you think, matilah penat nak cuci nanti...tak pun! Biasanya saya bilas selepas guna, and masukkan dalam wetbag dulu if I'm on the go. Tapi sekarang, am going even greener by washing my cloth pads using buah lerak. Now that, deserves an entire entry!

4. No more discomforts: I used to have minor discomforts, discharge and itchiness when I used disposable liners, and once I started with cloth, they’re gone!

6. Healthier: Saya tak pasti, adakah berkaitan dengan penggunaan cloth pads, tapi my first period cycle using cloth, langsung tak ada sakit senggugut. Tak terasa pun period tu datang! Dan period saya lebih cepat selesai. Plus the pads are made of breathable cloth, so not only is it's comfy, no chemicals whatsoever yang boleh diserap oleh tubuh, lebih sihat, bukan? :-)

7. Environmental friendly: Obviously.

8. More economical: In the long run, of course. I presented the calculation earlier, so you can see for yourself.

And just like disposable pads, ada banyak jenis bergantung kepada bahan yang digunakan, saiz, ketebalan. Terserah anda untuk memilih. Saya sarankan, get a starter pack 1st, see how a clothpad would feel. Lepas tu kalau berkenan, beli sikit2, nak keluarkan RM400 sekepuk hentak memang lah senak, cuba gaji bulan ni beli satu set, bulan depan beli sikit lagi. Kalau nak lagi budget, boleh cuba skim kutu untuk clothpads ni, banyakkk kat facebook! Cara ini lambat sikit la, but at least you can manage your cashflow better.

Last but not least, let's us do our part in saving Mother Earth!
